artfulhound A varied beast of an album - prog like New Life to dreamy wistful Prelude to Elation. Really love this - a band that keeps me on my toes, thought they were already pretty good in the first album but they've gone and blown us out of the water with this stunning follow up. Really love seeing them live. The best is Bullet Train ! Favorite track: Bullet Train.

John Ferguson From the opening riff of the title track to the end, this album is a winner. If you are a connoisseur of great guitarists, then leader Alex Munk will impress. Shades of Frisell, Holdsworth, David Torn or Mike Walker, but all with his own stamp. The band is equally superb - Dave Hamblett (Ivo Neame, Jim Hart), Matt Robinson (Snowpoet, Rueben Fowler) & quite understandably everyone's go-to bassist these days Conor Chaplin (Dinosaur, World Service Project et al) are among the cream of the younger generation of Brit jazzers! Also catch all of Flying Machines on Sam Rapley's new album 'Fabled' here on Bandcamp too. All three albums (including the eponymous 2016 debut by Flying Machines) are simply wonderful stuff! Favorite track: New Life.

about

Having established themselves as one of the biggest breakthrough acts to have emerged from the exploding UK jazz scene in recent years, Flying Machines continue their rapid ascent with the release of their second album New Life.

New Life represents a significant milestone in the band’s development. In partnership with Grammy, MOBO and Mercury nominated producer Sonny Johns, the band’s trademark fusion of contemporary jazz with progressive rock has been lifted to soaring new heights. From thundering, all out metal assaults, to ambient meditations and plaintive melodies, New Life sees Flying Machines pushing the envelope in terms of extremities of dynamics and explorations of form, with a marked leap forward in production values. The band also document their foray into the anarchic freedom of group improvisation for the first time, with unrestrained, improvised interludes that dove tail gracefully into more expansive and through-composed tracks, a risk-embracing approach that now informs the band’s electric live performances.
